Technorati tags bookmarklet.

Filed under: Tagging, Tags, Technorati, Weblogs — Hogg @ 4:45 am

Update: See this comment for the code for a bookmarklet that opens the tag links in a new tab/window. Let me know what you think.

Update 2: I know the code doesn’t all fit on the page with the Emire theme. Sorry. You should still not have a problem selecting it all to copy and paste.

Update: I updated the code to add a little Technorati icon next to the tags. To use it, just replace <img id="image329" src="https://freehogg.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/04/technorati.gif" alt="Technorati" /> with your own file location, and viola! You’ve got an icon.

Technorati technorati tags: , , ,

I’ve started using a bookmarklet I found at Lorelle’s blog to add my Technorati tags to the bottom of the posts. Here’s how to make your own:

  1. Copy the code below.
  2. Right-click on your bookmarks toolbar and select New Bookmark.
  3. Change the Name to whatever you want. I use “Technorati tags”.
  4. Paste the code into the location box.

javascript:(function(){var a='';var t=prompt('Enter Tags without commas:','');if(!t) return;var tr=t.split(' ');a+='<p><img id="image329" src="https://freehogg.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/04/technorati.gif" alt="Technorati" /> technorati tags: ';for(var i=0;i<tr.length;i++){if(i > 0){a+=', ';}a+='<a href='+unescape('%22')+'http://www.technorati.com/tags/'+tr[i]+unescape('%22')+' rel='+unescape('%22')+'tag'+unescape('%22')+'>'+tr[i]+'</a>';}a+='</p>';prompt('Copy this code, press OK, then paste to your blog entry:',a);})()

Now, whenever you write a post, just click on the bookmarklet, enter in the tags, and it will generate the HTML to paste into your blog post.

Is there a difference between these two?

  6. Nope. Technorati in all it’s greatness works the same when you use “tags” or “tag”. You choose your favorite.

  18. The use of the icon is a nice addition to the bookmarklet. And just a reminder, as pointed out in my technique on this, the tags do not have to lead the reader away from your site to Technorati.

If you want, you can replace it with links to WordPress.com tags:

    http://wordpress.com/tag/

Or you can add tags that help the reader stay on your blog and make the tags become part of your navigation. Change the URL to one of the following examples:

    http://example.wordpress.com/tag/
    http://example.wordpress.com/index.php?s=
    /index.php?s=

There are a lot of ways this bookmarklet can be played with. I’m using it differently even now than I did when I wrote the first article on it. I love seeing all the ways people can experiment with this to make it there own.

  22. Great script. However, is there a way to amend it so that the ‘+’ signs used to combine words in the tags do not appear in the published tag?

For example, adding the tag “NatWest+Three” results in NatWest+Three.

Would it be possible to have the script automatially create the “rel” field without the ‘+’ sign? Like this: NatWest Three

I take it one must combine words with the ‘+’ sign to begin with?

    Comment by Stefan — 07.29.06 @ 7:41 am

  23. Stefan, I do not know if there is a work around for that. I didn’t write the script, I got it from Lorelle. I would check with her.

    Comment by Hogg — 07.31.06 @ 12:31 am

  24. Stefan: No, there isn’t. The plus sign is recognized by all search engines and tagging services as the inclusion of both words. Without it, you got one word.

There may be a way of customizing the bookmarklet to include the plus in the code but not the visible text. I’ll look into that.

i’ve been searching for a script like this for quite sometime and i’m glad i stumbled into your tutorial, as well as lorelle’s one.

i found your explanation easier to follow.
lorelle’s work is amazing and finding her blog was today’s highlight.
one can find everything in there, with a depth that will suit a lot of people. it’s very helpful reading.

but your version of the story is nicer when you just want to get the thing working.
i use a different icon and added a align=left” to the img tag, to get the icon leveled with the text.

anyway i just wanted to thank you for the work and for helping me solve this problem.

To be honest, I don’t know. I use Firefox which is based on the same code as the Netscape browser, so I would think that it would work. If I were you, I would upgrade to a more current browser like Firefox, Opera, or Internet Explorer 7.

  40. Hi Hogg.

I’ve just started to use tags on my blog so this tool come
    very handy, thanks.

However, the first thing that struck me is that ones the
tags are clicked it will take people OFF my blog which
would be a no, no so to speak.

Is there away to implement “open in new window” in
    the script?

    Cheers

    Comment by Chris — 01.13.07 @ 6:26 am

  41. Chris,

You can make the link open in a new window by adding this code:

Find the part that looks like this: 'tag'+unescape('%22')+'>'
And change it to this: 'tag'+unescape('%22')+' target='+unescape('%22')+'_blank'+unescape('%22')+'>'

That should do the trick. I didn’t test it, so let me know if it works.

What I did was add the target attribute to the script. The reason I didn’t do it before is because that attribute is not valid in XHTML 1.1. It is valid in XHTML 1.0 transitional, however. So, good luck and let me know the results.

    Comment by Hogg — 01.13.07 @ 11:04 am

  42. I tested it and it works beautifully. So, use this code to open the tag links in a new window.

    javascript:(function(){var a='';var t=prompt('Enter Tags without commas:','');if(!t) return;var tr=t.split(' ');a+='<p><img id="image329" src="https://freehogg.wordpress.com/files/2006/04/technorati.gif" alt="Technorati" /> technorati tags: ';for(var i=0;i<tr.length;i++){if(i > 0){a+=', ';}a+='<a href='+unescape('%22')+'http://www.technorati.com/tags/'+tr[i]+unescape('%22')+' rel='+unescape('%22')+'tag'+unescape('%22')+' target='+unescape('%22')+'_blank'+unescape('%22')+'>'+tr[i]+'</a>';}a+='</p>';prompt('Copy this code, press OK, then paste to your blog entry:',a);})()

    Enjoy!

  46. This works great! I do have one little question however. I use Dotclear as my blogging tool, and my posts are in wiki, not html. I’ve played a bit as I know I can include html in a wiki post by using ///html before an html coded part and /// following it. However, there HAS to be a carriage return after the ///html in order for this to work and I have no clue how to code that in the javascript as I am definitely not a coder. Any suggestions?

    Comment by Benoit — 01.26.07 @ 8:53 am

  47. The way the bookmarklet is set up right now, I don’t think there is any way to include a carriage return, it all has to be on one line. But, I’m no JavaScript pro so I could be wrong. Sorry I couldn’t help more.

    Comment by Hogg — 01.27.07 @ 12:34 am
