Google Transit – Google Labs’ newest experiment.

Filed under: Google — Hogg @ 9:19 am

Google Transit is the latest experiment to come out of Google Labs. It hooks together Google Maps and information from “participating public transit agencies” (meaning just Portland, Oregon right now), allowing you to plan local trips via public transit systems. The Official Google Blog had this to say:

With it (Google Transit), commuters will be able to easily access public transit schedules, routes, and plan trips using their local public transportation options. This first release covers only the Portland, Oregon metro area, but we are working to expand our coverage very soon.

I could definitely see this as a useful tool for someone living in an area with a decent public transit system. I, however, will not be able to take advantage of the service since even if the Kansas City metro area became a “participating agency” they would have nothing to offer due to the absence of good public transportation.
