Get the latest OpenOffice.org update on Ubuntu, the right way too.

Filed under: Linux, Open Source, Software, Ubuntu — Hogg @ 11:25 pm

In the spirit of the post on correctly installing Firefox 1.5 and Jeff‘s post on how to correctly install Opera, here is how to get the latest version (2.0.1 at the time of writing) of OpenOffice.org on Ubuntu Linux 5.10. This info came from The Open Source Weblog.

  • Open the Synaptic Package Manager via the System > Administration menu and enter your password.
  • Click on Repositories under the Settings menu.
  • In the Software Preferences dialog that opens, click Add.
  • Click Custom in the Edit Repositories… dialog.
  • Enter deb http://people.ubuntu.com/~doko/OOo2 ./ into the APT Line.
  • Click Add Repository and then OK out of the Software Preferences dialog.

This should add the updated files to your package manager. Now you need to update your system.

  • Close the Synaptic Package Manager and open the Update Manager via the System > Administration menu and enter your password.
  • If all went as planned, the Update Manager should show you a list of the files that can be updated. Click Install and Ubuntu will do the rest.

You should have shortcuts to the updated versions of OpenOffice.org on your Applications menu. You may have to move the shortcuts around with the Applications Menu Editor under the System Tools menu. (My shortcuts showed up in the Debian menu, but I wanted them in the Office menu.)

This should get you up and running, let me know how it goes.

A quicker, geekier method using the Terminal is available at The Open Source Weblog.
